In a nut shell, the jeeps compter center. OBD stands for On Board Diagnostic. These comupters or ECU's should have ports to contect to a scanner to get numeric codes for doing diagnostics.
Instead of having to do the Morse code method. The numbers just stand for the model. Earlier ones are OBD1 and and are less sophisticated.
You get what you pay for with the scanners though. I did not realize this, but some only give one code at a time and the one that is displayed is the lst code registered. The highend ones give all the codes from first to last. Sometimes if one code is tripped, it will cause others to trip as well.

Cycle the ignition key on & off 3 times leaving it in the ON position the last time. After about 5-8 seconds the codes will come up on the odometer one at time until the last code comes up that means 'end of codes'. If you have no codes stored in the computer, you'll just get the 'end of code' number. (I believe it's 55 but I'm not sure)Have your service manual ready to translate the code numbers into info. I have a 98 XJ sport and this process doesn't work on my truck. I've already read about it (and made a post about it) that shows what I found. They say it's a rumor, but supposedly this trick won't work on 98 and newer models. As a matter of fact, I just had my truck scanned yesterday.
After paying more than I thought I needed to, I went searching for a price on one of the ocmputers so I can do it myself. Turns out that you can buy a specific or generic one, the generic one being about 20 dollars more. You can get a few more features out of a specific model, though. The actual product you buy isn't a computer.it's the hardware adn software that you can hook up to your own PC. You can read about it or order it here.
