GETTY An experienced beekeeper handling hives correctly Then various lethal diseases took hold. Finally we ravaged them with pesticides and insecticides. No surprise to hear, then, that the bee population of the UK was in decline for years.
When news of this crisis reached the ears of eco-conscious townies, however, many rallied to the defence of the nectar guzzlers and a new breed of novice beekeeper was born, seduced by the idea of helping the planet and cultivating their own honey into the bargain. In London alone the number of hives kept by amateur apiarists rose from 1,677 in 2008 to 3,500 by 2013. There are now said to be no fewer than 5,000 and the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) boasts 24,000 members nationwide.
These well-meaning amateurs are this week being blamed for a string of 'swarming' incidents. On Monday, a swarm of bees virtually enveloped a parked car on the high street in Marlborough, Wiltshire. On the same morning police in Chichester, West Sussex, erected a cordon around a tree which had one branch covered in bees. These incidents were quickly followed by a report from Salisbury, Wiltshire, of 10,000 bees descending on the market square, a situation that was only resolved when a beekeeper was called in to remove them. Geraldine Wright, professor of insect neuroethology at the University of Newcastle, immediately fingered enthusiastic but amateur urban beekeepers. 'A lot of these people are novice beekeepers and they're not keeping track of what's happening in the colony,' she said on Tuesday.

The key to preventing swarms is to stop the creation of rivals to the reigning queen bee by destroying queen cells or by moving them to a different part of the hive. Both actions have the effect of stopping a swarm which is basically a retreat by the older generation of bees to a new home.
Managing a colony in this way requires not only regular inspections of the hive at this time of year but also knowing when to act. A number of experts reckon that too many novices are failing on one or both counts. That said, the results of last year's BBKA Honey Survey are heartening. It reported that Britain's honey bees produced their best crop for five years, with the average yield per colony up 28 per cent from 25lb to 32lb. But the BBKA's director of public affairs, Tim Lovett, sounded a note of caution, saying: 'While this increase is great news for beekeepers and honey bees the historic average is 40lb plus per hive so there is still some way to go if we are to return to our most productive.' The continuing impact of diseases and pests such as the Varroa mite are believed to be behind the shortfall and the association is determined to stamp these out by promoting better husbandry. Much of the funding for beekeeper training comes from its Adopt A Beehive scheme which allows members of the public to be 'armchair beekeepers' and follow the yearly progress of a local apiary from the comfort of their own homes.
